STUDY ABROAD

Instructor: Paulette Singley

Summer 2022 | WSOA

This studio explores the city of Venice, Italy, and imagines new architectural possibilities within its historical, environmental, and cultural contexts. It aims to explore minor and major architectures—ranging in scale and complexity from the floating Vaporetto (water taxis) stops to the MOSE (MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) project to protect the city from flooding.  Venice offers site‐specific lessons on ways in which architecture and the sea interact, and unique opportunities to examine its lagoon ecosystem and art biennale, providing inspiration that informs their design proposals. The project develops proposals that build on an existing architectural site within the Venetian lagoon. Historic references, materiality & patination, the effects of hydrology, and architectural precedents will all contribute to the design of a building for the display of art-objects.
